China: GuangZhou Part II

We took MTR from Station YueXiu Park Exit E(越秀公园站E出口) to Station DongShanKou Exit C(东山口站C出口) . It was a 10 minutes walk from the station to Lao Ban Zhang restaurant(老班长餐厅).

Lao Ban Chang's entrance

The menu was very simple and direct. One sheet was for all the cold dishes(小菜).

Another sheet was for their signature soup dumpling(汤包). There were 4 types, beef, pork, pork with lard and vegetarian soup dumpling.

Look at the crowd!

I prefer to order the small dishes directly from the counter because I could easily pick the dishes that look good to me.

Clock wise from left: Potatoes(土豆丝), vegetables(豆苗), lotus root(莲藕蜜), cucumber(拍黄瓜) and chicken feet(无骨风爪)

Potatoes dish was the best, but we were told that it was sold out when we wanted to order a second plate.

The porridge(小米粥), best with the cold dishes.

Finally the piping hot soup dumpling arrived at our table.Did you notice the handles with different colors? Different color code was used for different type of soup dumplings.
One tray of soup dumplings(about 10 dumplings) was sold at RMB11-RMB13, very cheap compare to what we have in Malaysia. We made sure that we had enough of it before we went back to Malaysia. :) The lunch was RMB72 for six, very reasonable.

After lunch, we went to GuangDong YCZL Travel Company(广东羊城之旅国际旅行社有限公司). I managed to contact them and added one of their agent in my msn list when I was in Malaysia. He quoted me lower price compare to the retail price at the attraction ticket counters.

For 5 admission ticket, the original price was RMB580
GuangZhou Pearl River Night Cruise 珠江夜游牡丹卡号 RMB70
GuangZhou Chime Long International Circus 广州长隆大马戏 RMB150
ShenZhen Window of the World 深圳世界之窗 RMB120
ShenZhen Splendid China Folk Culture Village 深圳锦绣中华 RMB120
Zhuhai New Yuanming Palace 珠海珠海圆明新园 RMB120

and we paid RM434/person. It was a big saving!

This handsome guy was the travel agent I contacted. He was a very helpful and patient guy.

While waiting for him to issue a receipt, I saw this brilliant idea, sharing an air-conditioner in two rooms.

Next stop was Bai Hua Dessert Store(百花甜品).

I thought it was a very traditional store, but unfortunately it was not. It was very commercial where we had to paid at the cashier and collect our dessert at another counter.

The Cantonese dessert was good, but I did not like the idea of using disposable bowls.

This egg dessert was very smooth and had a very nice fragrant. Recommended. The bill for dessert was RMB18.

Not far from Ban Hua Dessert Store, there was this Da Yang Steamed Soup(达杨原味炖品).

menu and price

We ordered their top sellers, steamed silky Chicken in Coconut(原只椰子炖竹丝鸡) RMB11 and steamed quial in coconut(原只椰子炖鹌鹑) RMB12. The slow-cooked soup was very clear, but full of favours! It also had a very natural sweetness.

After the dessert and soup, we walked to Beijing Road Pedestrian Street(北京路步行街), a famous shopping area with more than 10 shopping centers and countless of other individual shops.

It was a busy place with shoppers packing both sides of the street.

The landmark of Beijing Road is the Millennium Trackway(千年古楼遗址), the earliest location of Guangzhou City.

It was discovered rather late, in the year of 2002. Later, the government decided to cover the site with display glasses.

The plan was perfect. We started from one end of the Beijing Road and ended at the one with BTS Station, GongYuanQian E Exit(公园前站E出口). From there, we took BTS to Dong Shan Kou A Exit(东山口站A出口) for a crab feast.

Chen Long Hang(成隆行) was the expert for Chinese mitten crab or best known as hairy crab(大闸蟹), the price per crab was ranging from budget tens to luxury hundreds of RMB. Customers could bring back the hairy crab or choose to let them cook for you. However the restaurant was not very spacious, it could only accommodate up to 20 person.

We ordered 2 crabs for each person, one female crab and one male crab. Experts would know male crab for cream and female crab for roe(雄蟹吃膏,雌蟹吃黄). And also, autumn is the season for hairy crab, male crabs are best in September and female crabs are best in October.

One of the expensive meal for this trip, RMB527 for 6 person.

After 15 minutes of waiting, the crab was served.

Could you see the yellow creamy roe? They were just fantastic! In the next one hour, our table was in absolute silence. Everyone was busy with their crabs. Just a little note, reserve more time for a crab meal. We were almost late for our next destination.

By the way, Chinese believe that crabs have a cooling effect. Therefore we were served hot ginger tea to balance up the cooling effect.

By 8pm, we were at Dashatou Pier (大沙头码头) for Pearl River Night Cruise(夜游珠江). The other 2 piers with night cruise were Tianzi Pier (天字码头), and Xiti Pier (西堤码头).

One of the option was cruise with buffet dinner, however we only paid for the normal cruise which served groundnut and hot tea.

building view

It was a pleasant experience. We truly enjoyed the pearl river view at the top deck.

We also discovered a supper place few doors away from our hotel, selling claypot porridge. It was so delicious that we had supper there continuosly for two nights.

ingredients for the porridge

The clam sauce was very special, it was good with the porridge or on its own.

I could not imagine that even a plate of simple blanched vegetables could taste so good.
